Where do you draw your inspiration from in regards to the style of filming and editing you use?
Joona Saikkonen: Just from watching a shit ton of other snowboarding movies I guess. I think our style of filming and editing is pretty normal. And by normal I mean something like the VG style, but then again for some people normal could mean some helicopters and super slow mo so I don’t know.
The song choices in this movie seem to be a bit more laid back, was there a specific reason behind choosing them?
JS: I’m not the right person to answer this because everyone pretty much edited and chose the song to their own part. And the filmers, Anton and Mauno, did the intro and outro.
What cameras were you guys using to film this?
JS:Canon 70d, and when Anton and Mauno weren’t able to come we filmed each other with some other cameras.
Who took the worst slam while making this movie?
JS: I don’t know if it’s cocky to pick yourself, but I gotta say it was me haha! I still have some scars from the slams that are at the beginning of my part.
There’s an ongoing debate on the relevancy of the free online snowboard movies and how they’re actually hindering the snowboard movie segment. What are your thoughts on this and do you feel it’s better to release a movie for free or should the visual consumption of snowboarding be controlled by a select few production companies?
JS: That’s a tough question. Honestly I don’t think that free online movies are killing the paid movies because people who really care will always be buying the good stuff. For example I watch like every single rail movie what is on the internet but still get the paid ones too. If you pay for a movie, you are less likely to forget it after watching it once and you will watch it regularly, but there are also some web movies that are so good you have to watch them again and again, for example the latest from Pocket Figures. Free online movies are also good because they are so accessible to anyone so they inspire a lot more people to start snowboarding and making movies. Like I was getting stoked to snowboard watching the KBR movies online when I was so young that I didn’t know paid snowboarding movies even existed nor would I have had money for them. For us it wouldn’t make any sense to make the viewers pay for our movie because then no one would watch it really.
Any advice you would give others looking to make a snowboard movie that is distributed for free online?
JS: Don’t include shots that aren’t worth using and learn to film properly. We also have a lot to learn in both of these.
Thanks and shout outs?
JS: Thanks to anyone who has filmed us or helped us in some way during the project and to all the people who have watched or shared the movie! Also thanks to you for doing this!
